Chief residents, peds hem-onc fellow join UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Sara Emily Allen Clark, M.D.

Dr. Sara Emily Allen Clark, a former chief resident in the Department of Pediatrics at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.

After receiving her B.A. from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, in 2009, Clark earned her M.D. in 2014 at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, Mobile. She was a pediatrics resident at UMMC from 2014-17 and served as chief resident from 2017-18.

An active member of the American Association of Pediatrics, Clark has served on numerous academic committees, has given a Pediatric Grand Rounds presentation at UMMC and has authored a poster presented at the Southern Regional Meeting in New Orleans.

Jeremy D. Courtney, M.D.

Dr. Jeremy D. Courtney, chief resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in medicine.

After receiving his B.S. in biochemistry magna cum laude from Alcorn State University in 2011, Courtney earned his M.D. in 2015 at UMMC, where he was an internal medicine resident from 2015-18. He serves as chief resident in the Department of Internal Medicine.

The coauthor of two articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, Courtney has participated in research projects at the University of Virginia and at the University of Cincinnati. He has coauthored three abstracts accepted for poster presentations and one accepted for oral presentation at scientific meetings. An active member of the American College of Physicians and the Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Fraternity, Courtney has received numerous awards during his academic career and is a Robert M. Hearin Support Foundation scholar.

Dereck Davis, M.D.

Dereck Davis, recently a pediatric hematology-oncology fellow in UMMC’s Children’s Cancer Clinic, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.

After receiving his B.S. in biology from Tougaloo College in 1995, Davis earned his M.D. at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, Mobile, in 2001. He had pediatrics residency training at UMMC from 2001-04, then served as a pediatrician at the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center from 2004-07 and again from 2009-14, serving as department chair of pediatrics from 2011-14. He also served as a pediatrician at NC Pediatric Associates, Henderson, North Carolina, from 2007-09. He had a pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at UMMC from 2014-17 and a blood and marrow transplantation fellowship at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta/Emory from 2017-18.

Davis has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Sickle Transplant Alliance for Research.
